Similarities Between the Fenix HM65R and HM65R-T
On paper, these two headlamps seem pretty similar (besides appearance, that is). Both headlamps have a max runtime of 300 hours. They are also both micro-USB rechargeable and operate on the same batteries: one 18650 Li-ion battery or two CR123A batteries. Not only that, both headlamps also offer a battery level indicator and lockout function. Both of these features allow you to know exactly how much battery life your headlamp has at any given time and ensures that it stays that way when not actively in use. The lockout feature protects your headlamp from accidentally turning on while in storage or in your bag while in transport.
Another feature that these two headlamps share is that they are both made from quality aluminum, magnesium, and PC material. Their magnesium alloy makes the headlamp more lightweight and durable than just a standard aluminum alloy constructed headlamp, two very desirable features for something meant to mount on your head. Plus, the durable construction makes it dustproof, waterproof, and impact resistant up to 2 m.
Key Differences:
Lighting & Distance
The HM65R offers up to 1,400 lumens shone over a distance of 535 ft (163 m). The HM65R-T offers an ever so slightly brighter max of 1,500 lumens over a distance of 558 ft (170 m). The two headlamps also differ with their lighting modes. The HM65R provides four spotlight modes and three floodlight, totaling to seven different lighting modes. Alternatively, the HM65R-T has six total lighting modes, three spotlight and three floodlight. Both headlamps offer impressive spotlight and floodlight functionality. The two modes can be used independently or at the same time for maximum performance.
Headband Technology
Where these two headlamps differ the most is their headbands. The HM65R is made with a dark, reflective perforated fabric. It also comes with an optional top headband for an even more secure fit. This headband is designed to either be worn on the head alone or can be fit to a helmet or hard hat.
Alternatively, the HM65R-T comes equipped with the patented SPORT Headband Fit System. Rather than a standard plastic strap adjuster, the SPORT system has a rotary dial that provides a more precise fit. This innovative system is made for convenience and those on the go, allowing for users to tighten the headband strap by simply turning the dial with one hand. Plus, the brightly colored reflective orange color ensures trail runners or adventurers out after dark are safe and visible to oncoming traffic. The perforated material used on both headbands ensure the headband stays put without weighing the headlamp down too much. The HM65R-T is not intended for use with a helmet or a hard hat, and the band will not expand far enough for use with either a helmet or hard hat.
Intended Use
Another main difference between these two lights is their intended use. While both of these headlamps offer some serious lumens and useful features, they also can be utilized in entirely different ways. The HM65R is made for everyday and on-the-job use. The headlamp’s optional extra strap ensures a secure fit, even in less than ideal conditions.
On the other hand, the HM65R-T is designed with trail runner’s and high-intensity outdoor activities in mind. Between the SPORT system and the newly designed, reflective widened headband, the HM65R-T is intended to make night time sport easier and safer.
